All departmental heads, project directors, contract managers and site managers are responsible for ensuring that the Safety Management System is fully implemented. In addition, ongoing initiatives, training and incentives are aimed at building a ‘safety culture’,fostering individual safety accountability.
Health and safety procedures are continually scrutinised and improved to ensure that the group’s policies are in line with international standards and guidelines.

Employee Wellbeing
In terms of general wellness, employees undergo entry and exit medical examinations prior to the start and at completion of most projects.
Under the group’s HIV/AIDS policy all employees have access to voluntary testing which is promoted through B&W’s HIV/AIDS awareness programmes.
Environment
B&W’s environmental policy outlines the procedure for identifying, eliminating and managing environmental issues that may arise on execution of projects. The policy and procedures are audited by NOSA, which forms part of our five-star head office accreditation. Independent audits and risk assessments are also conducted on an ad hoc project basis.
On a project basis, we abide by our clients specific environmental policies. The group trains and coaches site personnel on the relevant environmental policy through daily ‘Toolbox Talks’ to ensure compliance and as part of induction programmes. Audits by the client and main contractor are done on a regular basis to ensure compliance.
